Question 2

What is the ruling on the Husayni rituals commonly practiced at the present time, including: (a) chest-beating while bare-chested; (b) celebrations or birth anniversaries of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) that include clapping and women's ululation, sometimes with chants containing music; (c) tatbir; and (d) torches, cooking, walking, and similar practices?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

(a) Men exposing the upper part of their bodies for the purpose of chest-beating is inappropriate. The correct practice is to refrain from exposing the body while chest-beating, especially in places of worship. (b) Clapping with the hands is permissible. Women's ululation is permissible in front of women, but not in front of non-mahram men. Listening to music is prohibited. (c) Tatbir in itself is permissible if it is only a slight wound to draw blood and does not cause harm to the believer. However, if it causes ordinary people to be repelled from Islam or gives occasion for Islam to be disparaged, it is not permissible—and this is what occurs nowadays. Therefore, someone who wishes to perform tatbir may do so in his home, away from people's eyes. This is also better for him so that his deed may be sincerely for God, if he truly seeks God's countenance through it. As for those who perform it in an organized, collective manner in front of ordinary people—especially opponents and non-Muslims—they cause people to be repelled from Islam, and their action is therefore harmful. (d) Cooking and feeding people is recommended. Walking for Hajj and for visiting the Messenger Muhammad (s), Imam al-Husayn (a), and the Imams (a) is recommended.
