Question 84
What is the ruling for Ansari women who live with family members who oppose the Call and naturally prevent them from going out to demonstrations? How should a woman deal with a mother who opposes the Call but loves her and has suffered greatly in life? Are women obligated to demonstrate, and if they refrain so as not to upset their mother, what should they do?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
May Allah welcome you, my daughter. A woman certainly has a major role; a man cannot replace the woman's role because she has a particular character that he does not possess, and a woman's social influence can at times greatly exceed a man's. An educated woman who can address society and influence it certainly carries an ethical duty toward her society, especially when she sees oppression consuming her people and their rights, and the other women should support her and go out with her. As for women going out to demonstrations, there are several previous answers you can review, and I did not say that demonstrating is a religious obligation upon women.
