Question 108

I have many practical questions arising from my work as a teacher. 1. Sometimes female students violate school rules by wearing noncompliant clothing. After repeated warnings we confiscate these clothes and items such as large hair clips and bracelets. May they be destroyed, or must they be returned to the student or given to her guardian? If an item remains with us for a very long time and the student graduates, what should we do with it? What about items that were destroyed in the past—must we locate those students and seek release from liability? 2. Is it permissible for a woman to wear a large hair clip beneath the head covering so that the head appears enlarged, like two heads, which some narrations compare to a camel's hump? Is this permissible, disliked or forbidden?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Because these items are the student's private property, they must be returned to her. As for the past, since these are minor matters, there is no need to investigate what has already happened, although it is better to give charity with the items or their value. Wearing something in the hair even if it makes the hijab protrude is permissible and not forbidden. In general, religion encourages a woman to care about her adornment in her home and for her husband, because this is a very important factor in family cohesion and in preventing the husband from thinking about another woman—God forbid.
