There are different methods of preventing pregnancy, including surgical ligation, contraceptive pills, and an IUD. What is the ruling on these operations or medicines if they prevent pregnancy permanently or for a specified period? What is the ruling where there is a medical need, fear of a large family, the burdens of raising children, or poverty?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It is permissible to use the methods of preventing pregnancy mentioned in the question—ligation, medicines, and the IUD. It is not permissible to abort the fetus after fertilization.
