Question 159
A person owes many days of fasting and likewise prayers from when he was healthy. He is now unhealthy because he takes medication as treatment. What is the ruling concerning making them up or expiation? Muhammad Mandil Latif al-Abidi-Holy Najaf
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. If a sick person owes prayers and fasting from days when he was healthy and hopes to recover from his illness, he waits until he recovers and then makes them up and offers expiation. If his expiation is feeding needy people, he must hasten to feed them even before recovering. If his illness is chronic and he cannot fast, he pays the prescribed compensation for each day: three-quarters of a kilogram of food. As for prayer, he makes it up in whatever manner he can, seated or otherwise, according to what his condition or illness permits. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
