Question 180

One of the supporters of Imam al-Mahdi-may Allah establish him on earth-asks: Peace be upon you, my master. Regarding ritual slaughter, the manner of slaughtering an animal or performing nahr upon it, the four neck vessels, and severing the animal’s head: when is it permissible and when is it prohibited? Please give us your ruling, and may you be rewarded. May Allah establish you on earth and make us steadfast in supporting you.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. In slaughter, the four neck vessels-the windpipe, esophagus, artery, and vein-must be severed. It is prohibited to sever the spinal cord, but if it is severed, the slaughtered animal does not become prohibited. Nahr, which is specifically for the camel, is performed by inserting a knife or sword into the hollow at the base of its neck once, twice, or more. It is not permissible to sever its head or slaughter it by cutting its throat before it dies from nahr. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
