Question 195

Meat and chickens come to us from Muslim countries of differing schools that do not believe in allegiance to Allah’s guardian (a). They are labeled as slaughtered according to the Islamic religious method. We have learned that they are slaughtered in large slaughterhouses where the chickens are hung, a worker cuts them at the head, and a conveyor carries them to the cleaning equipment. We do not know whether they are directed toward the qibla and slaughtered according to the religious conditions. Some crates arrive containing chickens that were not slaughtered-that is, with their heads still attached-because the worker missed them. What is their ruling, my master and vicegerent? Sayyid Hasan Muhammad Ali al-Hammami Holy Najaf

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The front of the animal being slaughtered must be directed toward the qibla. The name of Allah must be pronounced over every animal in the voice of the Muslim person who personally performs the slaughter. The four neck vessels must be severed. Severing the spinal cord is prohibited, but the slaughtered animal does not become prohibited unless the slaughterer treats the ruling with contempt. If these conditions are not observed in slaughterhouses, it is not permissible to eat the meat they produce even if they are in Muslim countries. If the conditions are observed, it is permissible to eat the meat they produce even if they are in non-Muslim countries. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
