Question 441
Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. My master and guardian, I would like to ask about khums. I have some money that I saved. Some of it was a gift, some was from my dowry, and some was from my salary. A year has passed over some of it but not over the rest. Must I pay khums from it? Must khums be paid from my monthly salary? Sender: Fatimah - Kuwait
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Khums applies to wealth in excess of the year’s expenses. Its khums is paid once, and khums is not repeatedly paid from it if it remains for years after its khums has been paid. As for what you earn each month, it is not obligatory to pay its khums each month. Rather, the khums of the surplus is paid at the end of the year. That is, designate one day of the year, and on that day each year pay the khums of the wealth remaining in excess from that year’s earnings. May Allah grant you success in every good, make you steadfast upon the truth, and make you among those through whom He grants victory to His religion. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Rabi al-Awwal 1431 AH
