Question 527
Peace be upon the supporters of Allah, Exalted is He. I have a large collection of verses from the Noble Quran whose interpretation I would like, together with a message-a request-to the Sayyed (a). I implore you by Allah to deliver it to him. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. My master and guardian, for some time now, when I seek an omen from the Quran, this verse appears to me: ‘He said, “Thus did Our signs come to you, but you forgot them; and thus today you will be forgotten”’ ([17]). When I open the Quran again, I find: ‘Do not approach the orphan’s property except in the best manner until he reaches maturity’ ([18]). What does that mean? I fear greatly that my fate will be, ‘thus today you will be forgotten.’ So I beg you, O Imam, to supplicate for me that I may be with you and support you against your enemies. All I want is obedience to Allah, but my soul commands evil and the world is deceitful! So kill the “I,” O Imam, as you did with your supporters who are near to you. I ask you by the right of Allah, Exalted is He, to supplicate for me. I am being compelled to face the people of the world for the sake of study, and all my fear is that I will fail the test. I am a sinner and my supplication is veiled, whereas your supplication is answered, Allah willing. Although I am certain that you are the truth one hundred percent, doubt overtakes me from time to time, and I immediately rebuke my soul for doubting you after all these proofs. Woe to it! We therefore ask you to supplicate that we remain steadfast in your allegiance, O Relief of Allah, His Proof, and His Riser. Forgive us, my master, for our shortcomings in serving you. May Allah hasten your relief and support you with His victory. I have many verses whose interpretation I want explained. If they burden you, there is no need to answer. We know that you are very busy, so forgive us for disturbing you. In the Book of Allah, Exalted is He: 1. ‘Among the people is one who purchases distracting speech to mislead from the way of Allah without knowledge and takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment’ ([19]). Does this mean one who circulates degrading television serials and misleading forms of entertainment? What is meant by distracting speech? Was Luqman-may Allah have mercy upon him-a prophet? What is his story with the young man, and why was he admonishing him? 2. ‘Among the people of Moses is a community who guide by the truth and act justly by it. And We divided them into twelve tribes as nations, and We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, “Strike the rock with your staff.” Then twelve springs gushed forth from it; each people knew its drinking place. We shaded them with clouds and sent down upon them manna and quails: “Eat of the good things We have provided you.” They did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves’ ([20]). Who was, or who were, the people who guide to the truth? What is the meaning of verse 160? 3. In Surah al-Ahzab, what is the meaning of each of the following: - ‘Allah has not placed two hearts within any man’s body, nor has He made your wives whom you declare to be like your mothers your mothers, nor has He made your adopted sons your sons. Those are words from your mouths, but Allah speaks the truth and guides to the way. Call them by their fathers; that is more just with Allah. If you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your associates. There is no blame upon you for what you do by mistake, but only for what your hearts intend. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. The Prophet has a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves, and his wives are their mothers. Blood relatives have a greater claim upon one another in the Book of Allah than the believers and emigrants, except that you may do good to your allies. That is inscribed in the Book’ ([21]). - ‘It is not for any believing man or believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have a choice in their affair. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into manifest error’ ([22]). - ‘And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus son of Mary; We took from them a solemn covenant’ ([23]). What is this solemn covenant? - ‘Remain in your houses and do not display yourselves as in the former age of ignorance. Establish prayer, give zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only desires to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely’ ([24]). Are the Prophet’s wives also among the People of the House (a)? - ‘Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. Allah has knowledge of all things’ ([25]). What, then, is the meaning of his words: ‘O Ali, you and I are the two fathers of this nation’ ([26])? 4. What is the meaning of Elijah’s words in al-Saffat: ‘Do you call upon Baal and forsake the best of creators?’ ([27]). 5. What is the meaning of what Glorious is He said about Solomon (a) in Sad: ‘And We granted David Solomon-an excellent servant; indeed, he repeatedly turned back. When the excellent standing horses were displayed before him in the evening, he said, “Indeed, I have loved the love of good over the remembrance of my Lord,” until they disappeared behind the veil. “Return them to me.” Then he began passing his hand over their legs and necks. We certainly tested Solomon and cast a body upon his throne; then he turned back. He said, “My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom that will belong to no one after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower”’ ([28]). 6. What is the meaning of each of the following: ‘Or do they say, “He has fabricated a lie against Allah”? If Allah willed, He could seal your heart. Allah erases falsehood and establishes the truth by His words. Indeed, He knows what is within the breasts’ ([29]); and, ‘Those who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by consultation among themselves, and spend from what We have provided them’ ([30])? 7. What is the meaning of: ‘They have assigned to Him a portion from among His servants. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful’ ([31]); and, ‘When one of them is given glad tidings of what he attributes as an example to the Most Gracious, his face becomes dark and he is filled with grief. Is one raised among ornaments and unclear in dispute [attributed to Allah]?’ ([32])? 8. In al-Ahqaf: ‘When We directed toward you a group of jinn to listen to the Quran, when they attended it, they said, “Listen silently.” When it was concluded, they returned to their people as warners. They said, “O our people, we have heard a Book sent down after Moses, confirming what came before it. It guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to the caller of Allah and believe in him; He will forgive you some of your sins and protect you from a painful punishment. Whoever does not respond to the caller of Allah cannot escape upon the earth, nor will he have protectors besides Him. Those are in manifest error”’ ([33]). What is the story of these jinn? Why did they not also mention the call of Jesus (a)? 9. What is the meaning of: ‘Among them are those who listen to you until, when they leave your presence, they say to those who were given knowledge, “What did he just say?” Those are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed and who follow their desires’ ([34])? Does it mean that they were very forgetful? 10. What is the story of Abraham’s guests, and why did he fear them? ‘Has there reached you the account of Abraham’s honored guests? When they entered upon him and said, “Peace,” he said, “Peace-an unfamiliar people.” Then he slipped away to his household and brought a fat calf. He placed it before them and said, “Will you not eat?” Then he felt apprehension of them. They said, “Do not fear,” and gave him glad tidings of a knowledgeable son. His wife came forward with a cry, struck her face, and said, “An old, barren woman!” They said, “Thus has your Lord said. Indeed, He is the Wise, the All-Knowing”’ ([35]). 11. What is the meaning of ‘with power’ in: ‘We built the heaven with power, and indeed We are expanding it’ ([36])? May Allah reward you with the best reward, my guardian. Convey my greetings to your father (a) and the supporters around you. Tell them: blessed are you; we envy you, and we enjoin you to take care of him (a). Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. ‘Among the people is one who purchases distracting speech to mislead from the way of Allah without knowledge and takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment’ ([37]): distracting speech includes singing, and it includes the argument of the people of falsehood with the people of truth and their casting doubts against the calls of the prophets and vicegerents. Luqman (a) is not one of Allah’s vicegerents upon His earth and is not a prophet sent by Allah, but he held the station of prophethood and was a wise man to whom wisdom was revealed. May Allah grant you success in every good and make you steadfast upon the truth. He is my Guardian, and He takes care of the righteous. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
