Question 540

The esteemed Imam Ahmed Alhasan, may Allah make you steadfast ... Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. I have some jurisprudential questions concerning some matters with which we are afflicted here in America. I hope that you will answer me, and you have my utmost thanks and gratitude: 1. The government here provides financial assistance and housing for a nominal rent to those who cannot find work. Is it permissible for us to work without the government’s knowledge and without informing it, since it would then terminate our assistance, so that we would have both assistance and work ‘under the table’? 2. Are we entitled to circumvent the regulations of this country in order to obtain other benefits by various means? 3. Is it permissible for us to work selling the lottery tickets sold here? 4. There are certain goods that the government permits to be sold only to a specific group of people and in specific areas because they are tax-exempt. If we obtain them, are we entitled to sell them? This is despite knowing that the government punishes this act with financial fines and sometimes imprisonment. 5. Through your answers on this website, we sense that they are divinely guided and correspond to reality. On this basis, I want to ask you to whom you would direct me so that I may increase my knowledge of your truth. I thank you very much for your time, and may Allah reward you with goodness. Sender: Amal - America

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. It is not obligatory to comply with man-made laws, and they are not inviolable from the standpoint of the religious law, so it is permissible to violate them and act contrary to them. Only the laws in the State of Divine Justice must be observed and may not be violated, because they are religious laws for whose violation a person is called to account and punished in the Hereafter. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Rajab al-Asabb / 1431 AH
