Question 564

Peace be upon you, my master and guardian. I wish you success by the permission of my Creator and yours and by the right of your great fathers and forefathers. To proceed ... I have two questions: The first question: Is it permissible to give khums to the present religious authority, and what is your opinion of it? The second: What is your opinion of the Sabians or Mandaeans? Are they People of the Book or people who worship Allah alone? What knowledge about them has come to you from your forefathers and fathers (a)? Sender: Ibrahim al-Musawi - Iraq

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success in every good. It is not permissible to pay khums to anyone except the infallible one or a person whom he appoints to receive khums on his behalf. There is a treatise on khums that contains a detailed explanation of everything, and you can read it so that the truth may become clear to you. It is published on the website. The People of the Book in our time are the Jews and the Christians. There are jurisprudential rulings concerning interaction with them in terms of purity and marriage, which you will find in the published book The Laws of Islam. You will also find them in the books of jurisprudential questions, which are likewise published on the website. I ask Allah to grant you success in knowing and supporting the truth. He is my Guardian, and He takes the righteous into His guardianship. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Muharram al-Haram / 1432 AH
