Question 727
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. There is no power or strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. I want to know to whom I should pay zakat and khums so that it reaches the Imam (a). This matter troubles me greatly and I do not know what to do about it. I purchased gold and some precious stones a few years ago for investment. Must I pay khums and zakat on them because I have kept them all this time?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
May Allah grant you success and direct your steps aright. It is not necessary that khums money reach Allah’s vicegerent directly. If you are among the believers in the truth, I have established an institution to collect khums and charitable contributions and spend them in many areas, including supporting orphans and widows, seeking knowledge, and means of conveying the call of truth and delivering it to the people. You can deliver it to some believers responsible for this matter through the bank accounts established for it, or you can deliver it to the call’s office in the blessed Mahdi Seminary in Najaf. As for money, stones, or gold that you hoarded and over which more than a year has passed, you must pay its khums once. After you pay its khums, there is no problem if you store it. You are not obligated to pay khums again on that which has already had khums paid, no matter how long it remains with you.
