Question 751

Dental implants are presently considered the greatest advance in dentistry, because they treat tooth loss without needing to involve any of the teeth around the missing tooth. A substance has been discovered and developed that caused a revolution in dental manufacturing. The discovered substance is derived from proteins from the fetal body and bone of a pig. We use it to fill bone voids in dental implants. The substance has been used worldwide for years and has been used by approximately four million patients around the world. Question: Is using this substance forbidden or lawful? Must we inform the patients for whom we used this substance? Did we sin by using it previously while we did not know? With abundant thanks and gratitude. The first substance: its trade name is Geistlich Bio-Gide®, patented by a Swiss company, www.geistlich.com. The second substance: its scientific name is Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD); its trade name is Emdogain, patented by the Swiss company www.straumann.com.

It is permissible to use this substance, and you are not obligated to inform the patients for whom you used it. One who used it for patients incurs no sin.
