Question 836

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you, my supporter brothers. Question: If I paid khums on a sum of money-for example, five thousand dollars-then placed the khums-paid money in a bank, the banknotes will have changed when I withdraw it. The same banknotes upon which khums was paid do not remain because they are exchanged. The amount remains the same, but the notes are not the same and no new money has come. In this case, must khums be paid on the khums-paid sum a second time? Please explain this matter in detail, with many thanks. A supporter

Scientific Committee Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Khums is not obligatory in the case described in the question.
