Question 196
I have two questions. First, is mubahala something exclusive to the infallible Imam, or may believers perform it when opponents of the blessed Call repeatedly demand it and assume they are correct if the believers refuse? Second, if a mubahala takes place, do the opponents die immediately, or do they have time to repent?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Mubahala takes place between two parties in order to invoke the curse upon the lying fabricator. Therefore both parties to the mubahala must clearly know each other's beliefs. Punishment descends upon the lying fabricator from either side, and it may descend upon both if both are lying. The punishment does not necessarily occur immediately or at the very moment of the mubahala.
