Question 28
What is the khazz in which prayer is permissible even though it comes from an animal whose meat may not be eaten, and how is its lawful slaughter performed?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Khazz is the fur of the beaver, the river otter, and the sea otter (sea beaver). Their fur—khazz—may be worn in prayer even if the animal was not lawfully slaughtered. Their fur may be worn together with the skin in prayer if the animal was lawfully slaughtered. Its lawful slaughter is like that of other animals that have flowing blood.
