Question 193
Is the Hijri calendar correct, or is there a problem with it because some people say it was established by Umar ibn al-Khattab?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The Arabic lunar calendar was originally the same as the Hebrew or Jewish calendar; that is, it was a lunisolar calendar, not a purely lunar calendar as it is used today.
