Question 36
What is the ruling on kohl, whether liquid or dry? Is wudu valid while wearing it? What is the ruling for a woman who spends a long time removing the kohl, to the point that she may miss the prayer and perform it later as make-up, and exhausts herself trying to ensure that not even a tiny spot remains—one that can hardly be seen without very close attention—until her eye becomes red and painful? What about kohl inside the eyelid, at the place where the upper and lower eyelids meet; must it be removed for wudu?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Kohl, whether liquid or dry, does not harm the validity of wudu unless it extends beyond the eyelash area in an excessive and abnormal way. If the kohl is applied in the ordinary manner, it does not have to be removed for wudu.
