Question 11
When a person has a cold or a similar illness, secretions may descend from the head and reach the mouth. Does swallowing them affect the fast, whether done deliberately or unintentionally?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The answer is in The Laws of Islam: swallowing phlegm and saliva does not invalidate the fast, even deliberately, so long as it has not left the mouth. As for secretions descending from the head, if they flow down and pass the throat unintentionally, they do not invalidate the fast; deliberately swallowing them does invalidate it.
