Question 13
May a person choose to have a tooth extracted or treated while fasting when he knows he will be unable to prevent blood or other secretions from reaching his throat? More generally, does swallowing blood with saliva invalidate the fast?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Deliberately swallowing blood is forbidden and invalidates the fast. If it is swallowed unintentionally, it does not invalidate the fast. Tooth extraction, dental treatment, oral surgery, or a similar procedure is not permissible while fasting if the person knows with certainty that it will cause him to swallow some blood or other secretions.
