Question 16
Some chronic illnesses require medication. Does this permit a person to break the fast, and how can he make up the fast if the condition continues throughout the year?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
He is a sick person who is permitted to break the fast if he cannot refrain from the treatment during fasting hours and cannot replace medicine taken by mouth with an intramuscular or intravenous injection. If the illness continues until the following Ramadan, the make-up fast is no longer required, and he gives an expiation of one mudd—3/4 kilogram of food—for each day.
