Question 29
My master, one of our Ansar brothers, during today’s intense fighting against ISIS in Mosul, was unable to complete his fast because of the extreme heat and the conditions of the battle, so he broke it. What is his ruling, and what is the ruling on fasting in such circumstances for the Ansar brothers who are fighting?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Nothing is required of him other than making up the fast. In general, anyone who is in difficult and harsh working conditions in which fasting becomes too difficult may break the fast and make it up later. However, he must first try to fast, and if he finds—between himself and God—that he is unable to complete the fast, then he may break it and make it up later. Every person knows his own self and condition, and it is he who decides, between himself and God, what he is capable of enduring under difficult circumstances.
