Question 28
My master, my niece is ten years old and fasting is obligatory for her. She lives in America, where the day is long, and she is very weak and does not have enough strength to endure it, to the point that she can hardly even speak. My sister told me that she is extremely exhausted, and she is still growing. Should she complete the fast? Her father does not accept that she break it, while her mother sees her condition.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Generally, fasting does not cause harm, God willing. I also have a daughter who is nine years old, whose physical build is not strong, and she fasted, praise be to God. In general, if you become certain that fasting harms her, she may break the fast and make it up at another time.
