Question 32
There is a fast called the ‘fast of the soul,’ mentioned in narrations from the purified ones (peace be upon them). The meaning of these narrations is that a person abstains from consuming living creatures. What is the ruling on this fast?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Personally, every year I abstain from eating animals and their products throughout the month of Dhu al-Qi'dah and during the first nine days of Dhu al-Hijjah. During the first nine days of Dhu al-Hijjah I also add the ordinary, well-known fast to this fast. This is not obligatory; rather, it is beneficial for the human spirit, its advancement, and the health of the body.
