Question 23

What is the Holy Spirit in the Quran, upon whom does it descend, and what is the relationship between Fatima al-Zahra and the Holy Spirit? Wa’il Saida Safar 1426 AH

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The answer is found in The Allegories. Also, Fatima (a), her father, her husband, her sons, the Imams, and the Mahdis are the Greatest Holy Spirit. Ahmed Alhasan It is as follows: Answer: The Holy Spirit is the spirit of purity, or infallibility. When the servant makes his intention sincere to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, and desires the face of Allah, Allah loves him and appoints over him an angel who brings him into every good, takes him out of every evil, and leads him to noble character. The Holy Spirit is an intermediary for conveying knowledge to the person entrusted to it. There are many Holy Spirits, not one. The one with Jesus (a) and the prophets is other than the one with Muhammad (s), Ali (a), Fatima (a), and the Imams (a). This is the Greatest Holy Spirit. It descended only with Muhammad (s), passed after his death to Ali (a), then to the Imams (a), and after them to the twelve Mahdis. Abu Basir said: ‘I asked Abu Abdullah (a) about the words of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: “Thus We revealed to you a Spirit from Our command. You did not know what the Book was or faith” ([59]). He (a) said: “A creature among the creatures of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, greater than Gabriel and Michael. It was with the Messenger of Allah (s), informing and supporting him, and it is with the Imams after him”’ ([60]). Abu Basir said: ‘I asked Abu Abdullah (a) about His words, Mighty and Majestic: “They ask you about the Spirit. Say: The Spirit is from the command of my Lord” ([61]). He (a) said: “A creature greater than Gabriel and Michael (a). It was with the Messenger of Allah (s), it is with the Imams, and it is from the Kingdom”’ ([62]). Abu Hamza said: ‘I asked Abu Abdullah (a) about knowledge: is it knowledge that the learned one learns from the mouths of men, or is it in a book with you which you read and from which you learn? He (a) said: “The matter is greater and more necessary than that. Have you not heard the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Thus We revealed to you a Spirit from Our command. You did not know what the Book was or faith’” ([63])? Then he said: “What do your companions say about this verse? Do they acknowledge that he was once in a state in which he did not know what the Book was or faith?” I said: “I do not know, may I be your ransom, what they say.” He (a) said to me: “Yes, he was once in a state in which he did not know the Book or faith, until Allah the Exalted sent the Spirit mentioned in the Book. When He revealed it to him, through it he knew knowledge and understanding. It is the Spirit that Allah the Exalted gives to whomever He wills. When He gives it to a servant, He teaches him understanding”’ ([64]). When the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (s), descended to this physical world to undergo the second examination after the first examination in the World of Particles, he was veiled by the material body. When he showed Allah, Glorious and Exalted, a sincerity the earth had never known the like of, Allah loved him and appointed the Greatest Holy Spirit over him. Thus he was the winner of the race in this world, as he had been the winner of the race in the first examination in the World of Particles. Ahmed Alhasan
