Question 59

What is the interpretation of His words, the Exalted: ‘Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment, on the day when a person will see what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, “If only I were dust”’ ([22])? Sender: Ibrahim Rughayl

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. A person’s hand becomes white through justice and black through oppression in the Kingdom of the Heavens. This is what Allah, Glorious and Exalted, made manifest with Moses (a) in this worldly life: ‘He drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the onlookers’ ([23]); ‘Draw your hand to your side; it will come forth white, without harm, as another sign’ ([24]); ‘Put your hand into your garment; it will come forth white, without harm, among nine signs to Pharaoh and his people. Indeed, they were a defiantly disobedient people’ ([25]); ‘Put your hand into your garment; it will come forth white, without harm, and draw your arm to yourself against fear. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. Indeed, they were a defiantly disobedient people’ ([26]). The wing and the garment opening lie against the chest, which is the place where the human spirit connects to the body. It is as though he brings forth for the people, in his hand, the justice, holiness, and purity within his spirit, so that he may show them his condition. The Days of Allah are near to Allah and to the guardians of Allah, and distant to the disbelievers: ‘Indeed, they see it as distant, while We see it as near’ ([27]), ([28]). They are the day of the rise of the Qa’im, the day of the Return, and the Day of the Greater Resurrection ([29]). At that time a person, and the people, will see what is in every person’s hand of justice or oppression when the realities are unveiled to them ([30]), and they will see what they had not been seeing. Then the false and oppressive ones will regret and say, ‘If only we had come bearing wilaya toward the guardian of Allah and His Proof over His creation’: ‘… If only I were dust’ ([31]). Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) is the possessor of the supreme wilaya, and he is Abu Turab-the Father of Dust ([32]).

↑ [28] It appears in a supplication from them (a): ‘… O Allah, make Your Prophet Muhammad (s) rejoice at seeing him, and those who followed him in his call. Have mercy upon our helplessness after him. O Allah, remove this distress from the nation through his presence and hasten his appearance for us. They see it as distant, but We see it as near. Hasten, hasten, my master, O Master of the Age, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful …’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 35, p. 96, and most books of supplications. (Commentator.)

↑ [29] Abu Jafar (a) said: ‘The Days of Allah are three: the day the Qa’im rises, the day of the Return, and the Day of Resurrection.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 15, p. 50. (Commentator.)

↑ [30] For this reason, on the Day of the Greater Resurrection Allah the Exalted will reveal the disbelievers and hypocrites in their true black and dark condition, so their faces will be black and scowling even if they were white and soft in this world. He will reveal the believers in allegiance with white and radiant faces, even if their faces in this world were dust-covered from hardship, affliction, and oppression by the wrongdoers. In the Realm of the Kingdom, each person appears according to his reality and inner condition. Jafar ibn Muhammad (a) said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, the Shia of Ali will be gathered fresh and fully refreshed, their faces whitened, while the enemies of Ali will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection with blackened faces and thirsty.’ Then he recited: ‘On the day when some faces will become white and some faces will become black.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 7, p. 194. Abu Jafar (a) also said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (s), while a group of his companions including Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) were with him, said: “When Allah the Exalted raises the people on the Day of Resurrection, a group will emerge from their graves with faces as white as snow. They will wear garments as white as milk and sandals of gold whose straps-by Allah-are of radiant light. Camels of light will be brought to them, bearing saddles of gold adorned with emeralds and rubies, and the reins of their camels will be chains of gold. They will ride them until they reach the gardens while the people are being called to account, grieving and troubled, but they will be eating and drinking.” The Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (a), said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “They are your Shia, and you are their Imam. This is the word of Allah the Exalted: ‘On the day We gather the mindful to the Most Gracious as a delegation.’”’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 7, p. 194. (Commentator.)

↑ [31] Al-Naba 78:40, part of the verse.

↑ [32] Abaya ibn Ribi said: I asked Abdullah ibn Abbas, ‘Why did the Messenger of Allah (s) give Ali (a) the patronymic Abu Turab?’ He said, ‘Because he is the master of the earth and Allah’s proof over its people after him. Through him it remains, and to him it finds repose. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: “When the Day of Resurrection comes and the disbeliever sees the reward, nearness, and honor Allah-Blessed and Exalted-has prepared for the Shia of Ali, he will say, ‘If only I were dust’-meaning, one of the Shia of Ali. This is the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘The disbeliever will say: If only I were dust.’”’ Ilal al-Sharai by Sheikh al-Saduq, vol. 1, p. 156. Abu Abdullah (a) also said: ‘The words of the Exalted, “On the day a person sees what his hands have sent ahead, and the disbeliever says, ‘If only I were dust,’” mean: an Alawi who holds allegiance to Abu Turab.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 7, p. 194.
