Question 64
What is the secret of the Throne Verse, and does it have a close connection to monotheism and the Imamate? Sender: Ibrahim Rughayl
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. This is the Throne Verse as it was revealed to Muhammad (s): ‘Allah-there is no god except Him, the Living, the Self-Subsisting. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens, whatever is on the earth, whatever is between them, and whatever is beneath the soil. He knows the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne encompasses the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Great’ ([56]), ([57]). Its secret is that it contains mention of the Reality-‘He’-the Divinity-‘Allah’-and the gate of the Divinity-‘the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’ It clarifies the distinction between the Reality and the Divinity at the station of knowledge and their unity in the Reality. It clarifies that the Divinity-Allah-is a manifestation of the Reality and an attribute of the Reality, and that this manifestation is due to creation’s need for Him, for al-Qayyum is not actualized except through one who subsists by Him. It also clarifies that He, Glorious is He, is the truly Living, while the life of everyone other than Him is from His life and subsists through His life. You will find greater detail in The Interpretation of Surat al-Tawhid, which will be issued after a time, Allah willing.

↑ [56] Al-Baqara 2:255.
↑ [57] Ayat al-Kursi according to the revealed wording has been narrated from the Ahl al-Bayt (a), and they mentioned immense merit in the reward for reciting it. Sheikh Abbas al-Qummi included it in Mafatih al-Jinan, but it has been deleted from some modern editions. This is an illegitimate interference in the writings of scholars who were careful to convey the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) as they were, without deletion or alteration. Al-Husayn ibn Khalid narrated that Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (a) recited: ‘Allah-there is no god except Him, the Living, the Self-Subsisting. Neither drowsiness-that is, slumber-nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth and whatever is between them and whatever is beneath the soil. Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them …’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 98, p. 263. Al-Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s) said: ‘Ayat al-Kursi is upon a tablet of green emerald, written with an ink particular to Allah. There is no Friday except that this tablet strikes the forehead of Israfil. When it strikes his forehead, he glorifies and says: “Glory be to the One for whom alone glorification is fitting, and to whose face alone worship and submission are fitting. That is Allah, the Powerful, the One, the Mighty.” When he glorifies, everyone in the heavens among the angels glorifies and proclaims Allah’s oneness. When the people of the lowest heaven hear their glorification, they sanctify Allah. No near angel and no sent prophet remains except that he supplicates for the one who recites Ayat al-Kursi according to the revealed wording.’ Mustadrak al-Wasail by Mirza al-Nuri, vol. 6, p. 116.
