Question 68
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be upon you. Concerning His words, the Exalted, ‘For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing the words of Allah. That is the great triumph’ ([76]), and His words, the Exalted, ‘Messengers before you were certainly denied, yet they endured denial and harm until Our support came to them. None can alter the words of Allah, and there has certainly come to you some news of the messengers’ ([77]): What is the difference or connection between the words of my Lord in the two verses above and the words of my Lord in His words, the Exalted, ‘Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought another like it as a supply’ ([78])? What is meant by these words that are not exhausted? Are they visions, prophecies, Allah’s proof over creation, or something else? Sender: Haydar al-Ansari
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The words of Allah are Allah’s revelation, whether through visions in sleep or unveiling while awake. In the two verses, ‘For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing the words of Allah. That is the great triumph’ ([79]), ([80]); and His words, the Exalted, ‘Messengers before you were certainly denied, yet they endured denial and harm until Our support came to them. None can alter the words of Allah, and there has certainly come to you some news of the messengers’ ([81]), there is a clarification that when these divine words are glad tidings for a believer, or a promise to the messengers and the believers with them of support and a good outcome, they are a divine promise that is fulfilled and does not change: ‘There is no changing the words of Allah.’ Likewise, no one has the power to alter or change Allah’s promise: ‘None can alter the words of Allah.’ The words of Allah are also constant and present throughout the ages and times. Allah tells the people: Do not let the scholars who do not act deceive you, so that you are deceived by their words when they say that visions and unveiling are from Satan, because these are the words of Allah, and there is neither change nor one who can alter the words of Allah. But these scholars who do not act have called the words of Allah the words of Satan because they themselves are satans and know only Satan and his words. These divine words are not exhausted. They are present in every age and are not limited by number because they issue from Allah’s knowledge, and the knowledge of Allah, Glorious is He, is unlimited. What can issue from it therefore is not limited by number-that is, it is not exhausted-because it is what can issue from Allah, Glorious is He, and what can issue from Allah is infinite.

↑ [80] In a hadith from Abu Jafar (a), ‘…’ until he said: ‘Then He rewarded them and said, “For them are glad tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter.” The Imam gives them glad tidings of the Qa’im’s rise and appearance, the killing of their enemies, salvation in the Hereafter, and coming to Muhammad (s) and the truthful ones at the Pond.’ Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 429. The question here is: How does the Imam give the people glad tidings in this age while he is absent from sight? There can be no answer other than a vision in sleep. This is the vision that the Messenger (s) described as revelation and as one of the parts of prophethood, and concerning which he stated that Satan cannot assume his likeness in a vision, nor the likeness of any of his vicegerents until the Day of Resurrection. Abu Jafar (a) said: ‘A man asked the Messenger of Allah (s) about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, “For them are glad tidings in the worldly life.” He said: “It is the good vision that a believer sees and through which he is given glad tidings in his worldly life.”’ Al-Kafi, vol. 8, p. 90. A man from among the desert Arabs who had servants and camels came to the Messenger of Allah (s) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Those who believed and were mindful-for them are glad tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter.”’ He said: ‘As for the words of the Exalted, “For them are glad tidings in the worldly life,” it is the good vision a believer sees and through which he is given glad tidings in his worldly life. As for the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, “and in the Hereafter,” it is the believer’s glad tidings at death. At his death he is given the glad tidings: “Allah has forgiven you and those who carry you to your grave.”’ Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 133. These are the words of Allah the Exalted for which there is no alteration. These are the words of Allah that the scholars of the latter age who do not act, and who are far from the Kingdom of the Heavens, ridicule. As it is said: whoever is ignorant of something opposes it. Because they have no glad tidings from Allah the Exalted-yes, Allah the Exalted gives them glad tidings at their death of Hell and the companionship of the devils and the enemies of the prophets, messengers, and Imams (a).
