Question 77
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. These are several questions from my brothers, the Supporters of Allah, in the city of al-Rifai; they are not personal questions of mine. The Exalted said: ‘Mention Mary in the Book, when she withdrew from her family to an eastern place and took a veil apart from them. We sent Our Spirit to her, and he appeared before her as a well-proportioned human being. She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Gracious from you, if you are Godwary.” He said, “I am only a messenger of your Lord, to grant you a pure boy.” She said, “How can I have a boy when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?” He said, “So it shall be. Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for the people and a mercy from Us.’ It is a matter decreed.” So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place. The pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “If only I had died before this and been something forgotten and out of mind.” Then he called to her from beneath her, “Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you”’ ([137]). Q1: What was the veil that Mary (a) took in verse 17? Q2: Who is ‘Our Spirit’ mentioned in the verse, and why did he appear specifically as a human being? Was it only to reassure her, or for another reason? Q3: How did he grant her a child-through marriage or by breathing? Was the breathing material or spiritual? How did the pregnancy occur, how long did it last, how was it not discovered, and was the pregnancy natural? Q4: ‘She said, “If only I had died before this …”’ Did she say this because of the pain of childbirth, from fear because she bore him without a father, or for other reasons? Note: Sheikh Hammoud al-Kinani directed these questions to the Sayyid (a). Sender: Ibrahim Rughayl
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. A1: Mary’s (a) veil was the prayer niche where she prayed apart from the people. A2: The discussion of the Spirit will be explained in detail in the book They Ask You About the Spirit. As for his appearing as a human being, reassurance was one of its reasons. A3: The breathing is the delivery to Mary’s womb of the psychic sperm connected to the soul. It is other than the material sperm, and delivering it does not require marriage. Rather, it is a subtle sperm from which the human form takes shape. It can enter from any place-the mouth, the nose, or the abdomen-for it is not material such that matter would obstruct its entry. Jesus (a) was born from a mother without a father; that is, he (a) differs from Adam (a), who was created without a father or mother. Allah created Jesus (a) in this corporeal world from a complete cell that Allah brought into being in Mary’s (a) womb, and in the natural manner: it was an ovum and came from the ovary, but was distinguished by being complete and not needing fertilization. It needed only contact with a psychic sperm, which I have explained in more than one place. The Spirit came with this psychic sperm and delivered it so that it connected with the complete cell from which Jesus (a) was created. In the normal case, the material corporeal sperm is connected to the psychic sperm, and the soul joins and connects with the psychic sperm at approximately the fourth month of pregnancy. In the case of Jesus (a), there was no corporeal sperm; therefore, the Spirit brought the psychic sperm to connect it to the complete ovum, which did not require fertilization, so that afterward the soul connected to this psychic sperm could connect with it and consequently with this newly created body. The pregnancy lasted nine months, but Allah made it a light pregnancy. It was not clearly visible so that people could distinguish it until the final hours. For this reason she left her prayer niche, her place of worship, and her seclusion with Allah, Glorious is He: ‘So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place’ ([138]). A4: After this entire journey with Allah, the unseen, and miracles, can any rational person say that Mary was afraid of the people? The one whom a person ignorant of the reality imagines to be afraid of the people pays no attention to them or to their words. Rather, she calmly brings Jesus (a) and presents him to them while they attack her forcefully: ‘She came to her people carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have certainly done an astonishing thing. O sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste”’ ([139]). She does not trouble herself to answer them: ‘So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?”’ ([140]). Therefore Mary (a) was not afraid. Rather, because of this pregnancy she left the House of Allah, her place of worship, her prayer niche, and her seclusion with Allah: ‘So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place.’ Now she was giving birth to this child: ‘The pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “If only I had died before this and been something forgotten and out of mind”’ ([141]). Thus she now became certain that she would forever be deprived of her place of worship and would not return to her prayer niche in which Allah’s signs had so often manifested to her. For this reason, ‘She said, “If only I had died before this and been something forgotten and out of mind.”’ He reassured her that he was the king of the Children of Israel, that relief lay in his birth, and that occupying herself with raising him was obedience and worship of Allah: ‘Then he called to her from beneath her, “Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you”’ ([142]). I ask you to convey my abundant greetings to the dear Abu Ali, Sheikh Hammoud al-Kinani-may Allah protect him from every harm. I ask Allah to grant me success and provide me the opportunity to meet and see him and all the believers. He is my Guardian, and He protects the righteous.
