Question 81

What are abrogating and abrogated verses? Sender: Zayd Safa

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The abrogated verses are those which ceased to be acted upon after a new ruling was sent down in new verses, which are the abrogating verses. An example of abrogating and abrogated verses is the verses that mention the waiting period of a woman whose husband has died ([147]).

↑ [147] Concerning the waiting period of a woman whose husband has died, the words of the Exalted were revealed: ‘Those among you who die and leave wives should make a bequest for their wives: maintenance for a year without expulsion. But if they leave, there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner. Allah is Mighty, Wise.’ Al-Baqara 2:240. It was then abrogated to four months and ten days by the words of the Exalted: ‘Those among you who die and leave wives-the wives shall wait by themselves for four months and ten days. When they reach their term, there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner. Allah is fully aware of what you do.’ Al-Baqara 2:234. What is strange is that the abrogating verse comes before the abrogated verse according to the order of the existing Quran! If the verses were ordered according to revelation, the abrogated verse should come first and then the abrogating verse. Allah knows best. (Commentator.)
