Question 83

What is the secret of the number 13, and why do most people-especially in the West-regard it as unlucky? Is that connected to the thirteenth Imam, meaning the First Mahdi? I should mention that, contrary to other people, I now regard it as a lucky number. Sender: Ibrahim Rughayl

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The answer to their taking omens and their pessimism is in His words, the Exalted: ‘They said, “Indeed, we take you as an evil omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and a painful punishment from us will surely touch you.” They said, “Your omen is with you. Is it because you have been reminded? Rather, you are a people who transgress”’ ([149]); and in His words, the Exalted: ‘They said, “We take you and those with you as an evil omen.” He said, “Your omen is with Allah. Rather, you are a people being tested”’ ([150]). The end of their pessimism and taking omens is in His words, the Exalted: ‘It was only one blast, and at once they were extinguished. Alas for the servants! No messenger ever came to them but they mocked him’ ([151]).
