Question 100
Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be upon you. To proceed: These are several questions that we ask Your Eminence to answer at the earliest opportunity, for publication in an article about Your Eminence’s call and the Supporters of the Mahdi (a). Several well-known American newspapers, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, and Newsweek have expressed interest in publishing the piece ([191]). May you remain well. Sender: Ziyad Qasim al-Zubaydi-independent journalist New York, United States Q1: We ask Your Eminence to introduce yourself briefly to a Western audience.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
My name is Ahmed. I used to live in the city of Basra in southern Iraq. I completed my academic studies and received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. I then moved to the holy city of Najaf and lived there to study the religious sciences. After examining the study circles and curriculum in the seminary of Najaf, I found the teaching to be poor-at least for me, or in my view-and also found a major defect in the curriculum. They study Arabic, logic, philosophy, principles of jurisprudence, theology-beliefs-and jurisprudence-religious rulings-but they never study the Noble Quran or the noble Sunna, meaning the narrations of the Messenger Muhammad (s) and the Imams (a). Nor do they study the divine character with which a believer must be adorned. I therefore decided to seclude myself in my house and study their sciences on my own without anyone’s assistance. I was merely among them, maintaining contact with some of them while they maintained contact with me. The reason I joined the religious seminary in Najaf was that I saw Imam al-Mahdi (a) in a vision. He commanded me in it to go to the religious seminary in Najaf and told me in the vision what would happen to me. Everything he told me in the vision did in fact occur. Q2: What are the principal goals of your call? A: The goal of the call is the goal of the prophets (a)-Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad: that the true divine unity pleasing to Allah spread, and that the earth be filled with equity and justice after it has been filled with oppression and injustice. Q3: When and where did you begin the call, and what were the circumstances at the time? A: The call began at the end of 1999 CE in the religious seminary in Najaf. It began spreading publicly about ten months before the tyrant fell. The tyrant Saddam tried to arrest and kill me, but Allah, through His bounty and favor upon me, protected me ([192]). Q4: You stated that you studied in the religious seminary in Najaf. Which scholars taught you, and did you complete the studies? A: I was in the religious seminary in Najaf and among its scholars as Saint Mary (a) was in the Temple and among the Jewish scholars. Q5: What steps did you follow in reforming the religious seminary, and did they succeed? A: My attempt to reform the religious seminary was at the beginning of the call, before it became public, and focused upon three areas: 1. Scholarly reform, for which I used two means: The first was writing a book entitled The Path to Allah. It had a good effect. Sheikh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi was influenced by it, admired it, and wanted to republish it, as some sheikhs and Sayyids among his followers told me at the time. The second was speaking and discussing with students and scholars the scholarly defect that existed. Those who believed in me, and some who were influenced by my words and the truth I was saying, assisted me in this. 2. Practical reform, concerning enjoining good and forbidding evil. I will give you an example: when the tyrant Saddam defiled the Quran by writing it in his impure blood-while Muslims agree that blood is impure and the Quran prohibits its defilement-I called at the time for the scholars to take a position, at least by issuing a statement. They excused themselves on grounds of dissimulation, for their own lives were dearer to them than the Quran. Had they believed that there is no power except through Allah, they would have taken a position and been certain that Allah would defend them. I personally took a position. I denounced this malicious deed by the tyrant Saddam and said repeatedly in my sermons at gatherings that Saddam wrote his own death with his hand when he wrote the Quran in his impure blood. Instead of assisting me, they began distancing themselves from me, and one of them expelled me politely! He feared that if Saddam seized me to execute me, he would execute him with me because he had heard what I said against the tyrant Saddam! In any event, in this area-practical reform-I found no response from them. 3. Financial reform, concerning spending charitable funds on the poor. This was the final stage before the call became public. I found very many students of the religious seminary who supported me in this: very few for the sake of the poor, and most because they themselves suffered from discrimination in financial disbursements practiced in the religious seminary. Some small results were achieved in this area after I personally, or some of my Supporters among the seminary students, engaged in bitter negotiations with the religious authorities in Najaf, including Sayyid al-Sistani, Sayyid Muhammad Said al-Hakim, and Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq al-Fayyad. The most verbally responsive was Sheikh al-Yaqoubi. He did not argue, but acknowledged the error and said, ‘We need financial reform,’ when one of those who believed in me at that time reminded him of the financial policy of the Commander of the Believers, Ali (a). In any event, the immediate results in all these areas were slight, and the people did not wish to take steps forward ([193]). Q6: What was your relationship with some of the well-known religious authorities in Najaf and elsewhere, and what is it now? A: It was not bad. Now most of them call for my arrest or killing, and some have publicly ruled that my blood may be shed, such as al-Haeri in Iran ([194]). Q7: Did Saddam’s regime attempt to pursue you? Please mention this briefly. A: Yes. They arrested some who had a connection with me even though they did not believe in me. After the call was announced, they even arrested a number of seminary students who had no connection to me; they were merely interrogating them in an effort to reach and arrest me. Praise be to Allah, who disgraced Saddam and his soldiers and sent them back disappointed. Q8: What is your view of the war that brought down Saddam’s regime, the American occupation, and the current political process? A: In a divine narration from Allah, Glorious is He: ‘The oppressor is a sword through whom I take vengeance and upon whom I take vengeance’ ([195]). Saddam was a tyrant and received his recompense from Allah by the sword. As for appointment by the people, I do not believe in it. Rather, I believe that Allah, Glorious and Exalted, appoints the prophets and vicegerents (a), even if the people dislike it ([196]). Q9: Did you participate in the elections or government in any way, and what is your relationship with the government? A: We did not participate in the elections or government in any way. From time to time the government demolishes one of the Supporters’ places of worship and arrests some of them. Most recently, the Supporters’ office in Najaf was closed and dozens of Supporters in Najaf were arrested before the events of al-Zarka. Among the arrested Supporters was Sayyid Hasan al-Hammami, one of Najaf’s senior scholars and son of the late religious authority Sayyid Muhammad Ali al-Hammami. Q10: What is your relationship with the parties and political movements present in the Iraqi arena-the Supreme Council, Dawa, the Sadrist movement, Fadila, and others? A: Like all other people, they are invited to believe in this call. Q11: Do you have followers in other countries? A: Yes: in Iran, Pakistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Morocco, Najd and the Hijaz-the Arabian Peninsula-Lebanon, China, Australia, Canada, England, Sweden, the United States of America, and other countries. Q12: I heard that you have followers from the Sunnis, Christians, and other religions. Please explain how this occurred and give examples if there are any. A: Most of these people believed after meeting Supporters abroad who explained the call to them, or after viewing the website. Many of them saw visions in their sleep and believed, or they had evidence from the unseen. As an example, this is a message from a Christian person in Egypt who believed in the call and sent it to the Supporter brothers over the Internet: Name: Emmanuel Raphael. Country: Egypt. Message: ‘Your Excellency, the envoy of the Savior, I have a letter for you written 322 years ago by Bishop Sarkis Mikha the Baptist, preserved and sealed. Although I have been unable to solve its riddles, Your Excellency’s name is clear in it. Please inform me of the appropriate address. With my respects.’ Emmanuel. Age: 71. Q13: What is your view of what is called the resistance and similar groups, and of sectarian violence and displacement? A: Is there a rational person who respects his own mind and calls the killing of people on roads, in schools, universities, and marketplaces resistance? Q14: Why did some political bodies accuse your movement of being behind the events of al-Zarka? What were their motives? A: When they demolished the Supporters’ places of worship in Karbala and Najaf and closed the office in Najaf, they prevented the media from filming or reporting the event. When the tribulation of al-Zarka occurred and some media reported the demolition, closing of the office, and arrest of the Supporters, they tried to cover up their crimes by blaming the events of al-Zarka on the Supporters, so they could say, ‘The Supporters deserved what we had already done to them.’ Praise be to Allah, the truth was exposed and their crimes became clear. Nevertheless, to this day the government arrests some Supporters, the office in Najaf remains closed, and the Supporters are not permitted to reopen it ([197]). Q15: Some accuse the Supreme Council, the Badr Organization, and even the Iranian regime of attempting to suppress opposing Shia movements. What is your view? A: Concerning this council and its branches, I will mention an incident so the account is documented. In the previous month of Dhu al-Hijja, about two months ago, a conference was held in Najaf. At this conference, some representatives of the religious authorities demanded that this call be fought. This statement was broadcast on satellite channels. A few days after this demand, the oppressive authorities in Najaf attacked and arrested the Supporters and closed the office. Q16: Some claim that the ‘Mahdist movement’ engages in misguided and deviant acts. What is your answer? A: If by the Mahdist movement you mean the Supporters of Imam al-Mahdi (a), I personally have seen nothing but good from them. Many are devout worshippers who enliven the night with prayer and the day with fasting. They do not disobey Allah or commit indecencies. They enjoin good and forbid evil. They believe in Allah; in all His prophets and messengers (a); in the heavenly books brought by the prophets (a)-the Quran, Torah, and Gospel; in the angels and the unseen; and in the Lesser and Greater Resurrections. If the people regard this as misguidance and deviation, then what are guidance and the straight path? Most of them formerly followed the scholars; some were from the Badr Corps, the Dawa Party, or the Sadrist movement; and some are well-known scholars. The truth then became clear to them and they followed it. Merely because they entered the truth through evidence pleasing to Allah, do they deserve to be defamed through lies, slander, and falsehood? I will give you an example of this falsehood and lying to which I was personally subjected. Several months ago, on the Iranian Al-Kawthar satellite channel’s program The Promised Mahdi, they hosted Sheikh Ali al-Korani. Almost the entire episode was devoted to speaking about me and distorting the image of the call. Among the things Sheikh Ali al-Korani said was, ‘Ahmed Alhasan says that he married his sister to Imam al-Mahdi.’ He knows with certainty that I never said this, and he knows that he is lying, but despite his old age and the turban he wears upon his head, he is not ashamed to lie and speak falsehood ([198]). Q17: Several movements claim Mahdism, such as the groups of al-Hasani, al-Marsoumi, the Soldiers of Heaven, and others. Is there something that unites them? A: Like all other people, they are invited to believe in this call. A group of followers of Mahmoud al-Sarkhi al-Hasani joined this call after the truth became clear to them. The existence of these movements alongside the truth is like the existence of the Samaritan and Balaam ibn Baura alongside Allah’s messenger Moses (a), and the existence of Musaylima the Liar, al-Aswad, and Sajah alongside Allah’s messenger Muhammad (s). All of these were paths of Satan for misleading people away from the truth represented by the vicegerents and messengers (a). Q18: What is your view of Sayyid al-Sistani? A: Like all other people, he is invited to believe in this call. Many of those who emulated him believed in this call after the truth became clear to them. Q19: What is the story behind your choosing the Star of David as the movement’s symbol? A: It was Allah’s choice, not mine. The six-pointed star is the Star of David (a), who was a prophet sent by Allah, and we are the inheritors of the prophets ([199]). Q20: Have your followers carried weapons, even in self-defense? A: Until now, no, despite the fact that forces affiliated with the Iraqi government stormed and demolished their places of worship in Najaf and Karbala, closed the office in Najaf, and arrested-and continue to arrest-some of them. Q21: How do you fund your activities, publications, and the like? A: Through donations from the Supporters. Their number is not small inside and outside Iraq, praise be to Allah. Q22: Where are your Supporters concentrated? A: In Iraq, some Gulf states, and Iran. Q23: What are the next steps? Do you fear arrest or assassination by the Iraqi government or other parties? A: On Al-Iraqiya satellite channel-a media channel funded by the Iraqi government that presents and defends the government’s position-during a news program a few days after the events of al-Zarka, after it had become clear that I had no connection to them, they telephoned a person who ruled that I must be killed. Neither the program’s presenter nor the government-affiliated channel denounced this statement. This indicates their approval of it, and I think it clearly declares their intentions. Q24: Where is Your Eminence now? A: In Iraq. Q25: Is there anything else you would like to discuss? A: I would like to address the Christian people in America and the West: You who await Jesus (a), have you read in the Gospel the words of Jesus (a): ‘But now I am going to Him who sent me, and none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” Yet because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When that one comes, he will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. Concerning sin: “because they do not believe in me”; concerning righteousness: “because I am going to my Father and you will see me no more”; and concerning judgment: “because the ruler of this world” has been judged. I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. But when that one-the Spirit of Truth-comes, he will guide you into all truth, because he will not speak from himself; rather, whatever he hears, he will speak’ ([200]). Thus Jesus (a) gives glad tidings of me in the Gospel that you acknowledge and read. I am the messenger, the Comforter of Allah’s prophets and messengers. If you are searching for the truth, this is the truth, and it has come.

↑ [191] These questions and their answers were published in the foreign newspapers mentioned in the question: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Newsweek. (Commentator.)
↑ [192] The Ahl al-Bayt indicated this time specifically: the time of the appearance of the one who prepares the way for Imam al-Mahdi (a). Indeed, they described him as being from them-that is, from their progeny-and in some narrations, from the progeny of Imam al-Mahdi (a) specifically. Abu Basir narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a), who said: ‘O Abu Muhammad, the nation of Muhammad (s) will never see relief as long as the children of so-and-so possess dominion, until their dominion comes to an end. When their dominion comes to an end, Allah will make available to the nation of Muhammad (s) a man from us, the Ahl al-Bayt, who proceeds with mindfulness, acts by guidance, and accepts no bribes in his judgment. By Allah, I know him by his name and his father’s name. Then the stout, short-statured one with a mole and two marks will come to us: the just leader, the guardian of what was entrusted to him. He will fill it with equity and justice just as the immoral filled it with wrongdoing and oppression.’ Asr al-Zuhur by al-Kurani, p. 208. The state of the children of so-and-so is the Umayyad state represented by the state of Saddam-may Allah curse him. Indeed, at the end of its demise, Imam al-Mahdi (a) sent Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan as his messenger to all people. His call did not spread, nor was it given the opportunity to spread, until the rule of Saddam-may Allah curse him-had ended. The narration then mentions the appearance of Imam al-Mahdi (a) after that. Allah knows best. (Commentator.)
↑ [193] I-and I seek refuge in Allah from the ‘I’-was a contemporary of this period and of the revolution against financial corruption in the religious seminary in Holy Najaf that Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan led, and I followed some of its details. (Commentator.)
↑ [194] All those who denied Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan denied him without evidence or proof, but purely out of desire and fanaticism. They did not hear the man, meet him, discuss his proofs, or encompass them in knowledge. Despite that, they denied him at the first moment. Did Allah the Exalted inform them of the unseen?! Allah the Exalted condemned these people and those like them in the Noble Quran. The Exalted said: ‘Rather, they denied that which they did not encompass in knowledge and whose interpretation had not yet come to them. Those before them denied in the same way, so see how the wrongdoers ended.’ Yunus 10:39. It is: ‘Allah’s practice concerning those who passed before, and you will never find any change in Allah’s practice.’ Al-Ahzab 33:62. The Exalted said: ‘… Is it that whenever a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you became arrogant, denying one group and killing another?’ Al-Baqara 2:87. They see truth only in themselves. Indeed, each of them sees himself as the sole truth upon this earth, reassured by those surrounding him who cannot distinguish a she-camel from a male camel, and they feel secure from Allah’s scheme and punishment. This is the description of the scholars of the children of Israel who fought Allah’s prophets Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad-Allah’s prayers be upon all of them. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan came to them with the proof of the Quran and Sunna and the proofs of the prophets and messengers. The Messenger (s) and the Imams (a) mentioned him by name, description, and country, and Allah the Exalted testified in the Kingdom of the Heavens to his truthfulness. Despite that, they did not affirm him and denied him; indeed, they did not listen to him at all. But this stance is neither strange nor unexpected from those whom the Messenger of Allah (s) described as the worst jurists beneath the shade of heaven. The Commander of the Faithful (a) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s) said: ‘A time will come upon the people when nothing remains of the Quran except its script and nothing of Islam except its name. They are called by it, though they are the people farthest from it. Their mosques are flourishing, but they are ruins devoid of guidance. The jurists of that time are the worst jurists beneath the shade of heaven. From them tribulation emerged, and to them it returns.’ Al-Kafi, vol. 8, p. 308. The narrations concur that they will be a target for the sword of the son of Fatima-peace be upon her. Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we return. Those who wronged the family of Muhammad will know to what destination they will return. The outcome belongs to the mindful. (Commentator.)
↑ [195] In Iqab al-Amal by al-Saduq, from his father, from Abdullah ibn Jafar, from Harun ibn Muslim, from Masada ibn Ziyad, from al-Sadiq, from his father (a), who said: ‘Allah the Exalted revealed a book to one of the prophets, in which it stated: “There will be creatures of Mine who lick up the world through religion. They wear sheepskins over hearts like the hearts of wolves. Their deeds are more bitter than aloe, their tongues sweeter than honey, and their inward deeds more putrid than carcasses. Are they deluded about Me, or do they seek to deceive Me? By My might, I have sworn that I will send upon them a tribulation that treads upon its halter until it reaches the ends of the earth, leaving the forbearing person bewildered. In it, the opinion of the person of sound opinion and the wisdom of the wise person will go astray. I will clothe them in factions and make some of them taste the violence of others. I will take vengeance upon My enemies through My enemies, then punish all of them without concern.”’ Al-Jawahir al-Saniyya by al-Hurr al-Amili, p. 327.
↑ [196] This is the description of the Imams of truth: they follow neither their own desires nor the desires of the people. Rather, they command according to Allah’s command and do not go beyond it to anything else, even if all the inhabitants of the earth among human beings and jinn unite against them. They see nothing but Allah the Exalted. In contrast, you find the Imams of misguidance among the scholars who do not act more eager than anyone to please the people and follow their desires, even if those desires oppose the Quran and Sunna. This is the difference between truth and falsehood, as in the narration from Imam al-Sadiq (a). Abu Abdullah (a) said: ‘I read in my father’s book: “The Imams in Allah’s Book are of two kinds: an Imam of guidance and an Imam of misguidance. The Imams of guidance place Allah’s command before their own command and Allah’s judgment before their own judgment. The Imams of misguidance place their own command before Allah’s command and their own judgment before Allah’s judgment, following their desires and opposing what is in the Book.”’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 42, p. 156. Ask those who declared elections permissible or obligatory upon the people: did Allah command them to do so, or did His Messenger?! They are Imams who call to the Fire, because they do not command according to Allah the Exalted’s command or judge according to Allah the Exalted’s judgment in His glorious Book. If they say that Allah commanded them to do so, the answer to them comes from Allah the Exalted. The Exalted said: ‘When they commit an indecency, they say: “We found our fathers doing it, and Allah commanded us to do it.” Say: “Indeed, Allah does not command indecency. Do you say about Allah what you do not know?”’ Al-Araf 7:28. In the exegesis of the Ahl al-Bayt concerning this verse appears the following narration. Muhammad ibn Mansur said: I asked him-meaning Abu Abdullah (a)-about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ‘When they commit an indecency, they say: “We found our fathers doing it, and Allah commanded us to do it.” Say: “Indeed, Allah does not command indecency. Do you say about Allah what you do not know?”’ He said: ‘Have you seen anyone claim that Allah commanded him to commit fornication, drink wine, or do any of these prohibited things?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘What, then, is this indecency which they claim Allah commanded them to commit?’ I said, ‘Allah and His guardian know best.’ He said: ‘This concerns the followers of the Imams of injustice. They claimed that Allah commanded them to follow people whom Allah had not commanded them to follow. Allah rejected that claim, informed them that they had lied against Him, and called this deed of theirs an indecency.’ Al-Ghayba by Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Numani, p. 131; Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 373. How, then, do they claim that Allah made it obligatory upon the people to elect these individuals to govern the lands and servants, when they are an indecency walking upon the earth? Allah does not command indecency or wrongdoing. The only one who fought this and did not submit to it is Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan, the Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a) and the promised Yamani. May Allah have mercy upon one who, when called to right guidance, draws near. (Commentator.)
↑ [197] This is the freedom they claim and the satanic democracy of which they boast. It led them to demolish the houses of Allah and attack unarmed people. Their democracy led them to restrict the people’s minds and beliefs. Their democracy led them to act according to the principle of the tyrants: you have no opinion, no identity, and no existence at all. Yes, this is the farce of the latter age, and its heroes are the evil scholars who justify the deeds of the tyrants and describe them as religiously legitimate. Is there any rational person who will save himself from this labyrinth that will drag you into standing in the Sufyani’s trench against Imam al-Mahdi (a)? (Commentator.)
↑ [198] Indeed, Sheikh Ali al-Kurani is not ashamed to speak falsely. He speaks of everything he hears without deliberation or verification. The Messenger Muhammad (s) said to Abu Dharr: ‘… O Abu Dharr, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is present at the tongue of every speaker, so let a person be mindful of Allah and know what he says. O Abu Dharr, abandon superfluous speech; enough speech for you is that by which you convey your need. O Abu Dharr, it is sufficient falsehood for a person to relate everything he hears. O Abu Dharr, nothing deserves prolonged imprisonment more than the tongue …’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 47, p. 85. Will you not abandon Muawiya’s weapon in fighting Ali ibn Abi Talib (a)-the weapon of lies, fabrication, and slander-through which the people of Syria came to believe that Ali did not pray, far be that from him? This one says that Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan married his sister to the Imam; another says he is a sorcerer; another says he possesses and subjugates the jinn; and another says he is an agent of Israel! Are you not ashamed of these cheap methods? Will you not stop laughing at simple people with such trivialities that have no connection to reality? Is it not time for you to return to your reason and right guidance and follow the example of the Ahl al-Bayt (a), their character, and their fragrant conduct-from which you are innocent and which is innocent of your lies, slander, ridicule, and denial without knowledge? You claim that you are scholars while following the path of fools. If you are scholars as you claim, here is Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan, who has challenged you intellectually. Is there anyone who will answer? Is there anyone who will answer? Is there anyone who will answer? (Commentator.)
↑ [199] The six-pointed star appears in many protective invocations and amulets from the Ahl al-Bayt (a), and it is used for protection and victory over enemies. It is the star and shield of Allah’s prophet David (a), and one of the sacred inheritances of the prophets inherited by the Messenger Muhammad (s) and, after him, by his pure progeny. It is now the star of the victorious one, Imam al-Mahdi (a), and his Yamani, Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan. As for the Jews of today, they are thieves of this sacred star. Every tyrant is inclined to attribute sacred things to himself. Does everything someone claims thereby become his exclusive property? Saddam adopted the words ‘Allah is greater’ as a slogan and placed them on his flag. Did that make them exclusive to him, so that we should delete them from our prayers?! How foolish is one who disavows the star of Allah’s prophet David (a) and attributes it to the Jews of today-Israel. Is Allah’s prophet David their David or our David? Is Jerusalem their Jerusalem or our Jerusalem? What is the matter with you? How do you judge? (Commentator.)
