Question 123

Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be upon you. I am an engineer. I worked for an American civil-engineering company specializing in building schools and hospitals in Iraq. I was among those who thought well of the Americans and believed that they had delivered us from Saddam’s rule. I accommodated the American engineers, sat with them, and regarded them as my friends, but I now deeply regret sitting with, associating with, and accommodating them. After reading your addresses, in which you regard America as the Antichrist and a tribulation, my question is: Is repentance accepted from those who accommodated and followed the American course? Is their repentance now accepted if they repent before the Imam’s (a) appearance, or will the Imam immediately uproot and kill them even if they repent? That is, is repentance not accepted from one who fell into the Antichrist’s tribulation? Answer us. May Allah reward you with the best reward of those who do good.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. If the Americans themselves repent and believe, Allah accepts their repentance and belief. Know that the most beloved of creation to Allah is the young person who repents from sin. His words, the Exalted, are sufficient for one who repents, believes, and begins anew to act in obedience to Allah: ‘Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful”’ ([273]). Do what pleases Him, Glorious is He: ‘The Hereafter is surely better for you than the first life’ ([274]). Remember Allah, for in remembering Him lies the clearing and purification of hearts. ‘Those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins-and who forgives sins except Allah?-and do not persist knowingly in what they did’ ([275]).
