Question 124

What is the religious ruling on wearing trousers with a head covering, and what is the religious ruling on the Islamic abaya? Sender: Adnan Mahdi

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. A woman is not required to cover her face, hands, or feet. She must truly cover everything else: her clothes must not be thin or tight so as to describe what lies beneath them. If, for example, a woman wears over trousers a robe or coat extending to the knees, and the part of the trousers that remains visible is not tight so as to describe what lies beneath it, there is no problem with it. Indeed, at times it may cover a woman more fully. But if a woman wears trousers with nothing over them while wearing a head covering, this is not correct and is not regarded as religiously valid covering. Indeed, exposing herself by wearing trousers in this manner is more serious than uncovering her hair and head.
