Question 147

The Exalted said: ‘Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah is capable of all things?’ ([289]). What does ‘cause to be forgotten’ mean in the verse above, and how is it forgotten? May Allah support you through His support.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Exalted said: ‘We will make you recite, and you will not forget, except what Allah wills’ ([290]). That is: except what Allah wills to cause you to forget in this corporeal world. Those verses that the Messenger (s) did not recite to the people in this corporeal world had an effect upon the ascent of the Messenger’s (s) soul and his return to the Reality, and consequently upon the Messenger’s (s) reception of verses better for the believers so that Allah might support them through His support. These replacement verses are a step forward toward divine support. They are like those verses with respect to guidance, but better than them because they are nearer to the appearance of Allah’s command and the support of Allah’s religion. Likewise, every Imam is a sign of Muhammad (s). The Imam who comes is like the Imam before him with respect to guidance, and is better for you because he is a step forward toward relief, the support of Allah’s religion, and the manifestation of the religion of truth over all religion ([291]). Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)

↑ [291] Shahawayh ibn Abdullah al-Jallab said: Abu al-Hasan wrote to me in a letter: ‘You wished to ask about the successor after Abu Jafar and were anxious about that. Do not grieve, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not lead a people astray after guiding them until He makes clear to them what they must guard against. Your companion after me is Abu Muhammad, my son, and with him is what you need. Allah advances what He wills and delays what He wills. “Whatever sign We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it.” I have written what contains an explanation and sufficiency for one of alert intellect.’ Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 328. Concerning the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ‘Whatever sign We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things? Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and earth, and you have no guardian or helper besides Allah?’ the Imam (a) said: Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (a) said: ‘“Whatever sign We abrogate” by lifting its ruling, “or cause to be forgotten” by lifting its written form-after it had been recited-and its preservation from hearts, and from your heart, O Muhammad, as He said: “We will make you recite, so you will not forget, except what Allah wills” that you forget, so He lifts its remembrance from your heart; “We bring one better than it,” meaning better for you, for this second sign is greater in your reward and more sublime for your welfare than the first, abrogated sign; “or like it,” meaning like it in bringing welfare to you. We neither abrogate nor replace except that Our purpose in doing so is your welfare.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 4, p. 104. Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir said: ‘Among the things Allah has power over are abrogation and revelation for your welfare and benefit, so that you may believe and your reward for affirming them may be abundant. He does whatever He wills that contains your welfare and what is best for you. Then He said: “Do you not know, O Muhammad, that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and earth?” He possesses them through His power and disposes of them under His will; no one advances what He delays and no one delays what He advances. Then Allah the Exalted said: “You, assembly of Jews, deniers of Muhammad (s), and rejecters of the abrogation of religious laws, have no guardian besides Allah the Exalted to administer your welfare if your Lord does not direct you to what brings welfare, and no helper to support you against Allah and repel His punishment from you.”’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 4, p. 104.
