Question 164

Does the soil of Imam al-Husayn (a) mean soil in general, or specifically the soil of Imam al-Husayn’s (a) grave and sanctuary, with respect to the permissibility of praying upon it? Some people who are not committed to prayer make prayer tablets, and it is said that they take the soil from riverbanks. What is the ruling concerning this?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. There is great merit in prostrating upon the soil of Imam al-Husayn (a). Husayni soil may be taken from between the sacred shrine and a distance of two parasangs in every direction, from riverbanks and other pure places. What lies beyond two parasangs-11 kilometers-is not considered Husayni soil. The nearer the soil is to the sacred shrine, the greater its merit. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
