Question 183
I work in a hospital, in the surgical ward. Women with burns on their bodies come to us, and there is no female staff to treat such injuries. A female patient may need to enter the bathroom with her husband, mother, or unmarriageable kin in order to remove the burned skin, and they cannot do this except with our assistance. What is the ruling? Abu Naba-Diwaniyah
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Muslims must provide female medical staff to treat women. Indeed, they must provide a suitable place in which women can be treated with dignity and honor. Many matters follow from this, including: A sufficient number of women must undertake the work needed to make up the shortage in every medical specialty. The places where women are treated must be genuinely separated, either by establishing women’s hospitals or by dividing hospitals. Regarding the case of Brother Abu Naba, when necessity requires it, male specialists may treat women’s burns. The sin and wrongdoing are borne by the government of the tyrant and by every Muslim man and woman who falls short in striving to provide the proper way to treat women. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
