Question 188
There are various procedures for preventing pregnancy, including surgical ligation, contraceptive pills, and an intrauterine device. What is the ruling on procedures or medicines if they result in preventing pregnancy entirely or for a specified period? And what is the ruling on aborting a fetus out of fear of having a large family, the concerns of raising children, and poverty?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. It is permissible to use the methods of preventing pregnancy mentioned in the question-ligation, medicines, and an intrauterine device. It is not permissible to abort the fetus after fertilization. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
