Question 192

1. What is the religious ruling on cheese imported from Western countries, and what is the ruling on its purity? 2. Milk imported from Western countries comes in dried and liquid forms. Is it pure, given that we consider it possible that non-Muslim hands have touched it? 3. Is fish imported from lands of disbelief and atheism judged to have been ritually taken? Is it permissible to use it as feed for domesticated animals? Is it permissible to eat it when we do not know whether it has scales or smooth skin?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. 1. It is pure and may be eaten unless it becomes known to be impure. 2. It is pure, and both its dried and liquid forms may be used unless it becomes known to be impure. 3. If you know that it has scales, it may be used for food, because the ritual taking of fish consists of taking it alive from the water, whether the one who takes it is Muslim or non-Muslim. This imported fish is caught with nets and fishing equipment, so it is ritually taken even if the fisherman is not Muslim. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
