Question 252
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Please be so kind as to answer the following questions: First: What is Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan’s opinion (a) concerning the plurality of horizons? Is there truly a plurality of horizons? Second: What is Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan’s opinion (a) concerning the Night of Decree? Is it one night, and what are the temporal limits of this night? Is it restricted to the night, or does it extend into the day, as stated in the narration from al-Tawwab that the day of Decree is like its night? Our final supplication is that praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Answer 1: The birth of the crescent has no connection to the horizon attributed to the observer’s location. Seeing it with the eye, however, is certainly affected by the horizon because that horizon is attributed to the observer’s location. If the just Imam (a) rules that the lunar month has begun or ended, it is established for all the people of the earth regardless of visual sighting and whether it is possible or not. Answer 2: The Night of Decree to which some religious rulings are connected is the night of the twenty-third of Ramadan, and its limit is until the break of dawn, but on the condition that the one who determines its time is the just Imam.
