Question 261

Is kohl permissible for a woman before unrelated men? Answer: It is not permissible for her to apply it so that unrelated men see it. But if she applies it at home for her husband, she is not required to remove it in order to go out or meet non-mahrams. Question: My master, I received and read your answer to the matter above concerning a woman applying kohl. Does this mean that it is unlawful for an unmarried woman to apply kohl at home, let alone outside it?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. It is permissible for an unmarried woman to apply kohl at home. Ahmed Alhasan
