Question 262
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his purified family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. One of the supporter brothers asked the following: I have a sum of 200,000 Swedish kronor and want to pay khums upon my money. I do not have a house or a plot of land. I live with my wife, have no children, and rent an apartment in Sweden. My monthly income is 15,000. Sometimes I do other work using my car; I give half of it to those in need and spend the other half upon the car. My wife’s income is 4,000 Swedish kronor. The rent for my apartment is 6,000 Swedish kronor. I pay 3,000 monthly between car insurance, car tax, and electricity, and spend 5,000 monthly upon food and medicine, and 2,000 kronor monthly. My noble brother, the question is: does khums apply to the brother asking, and how much does he pay? May Allah grant you success in every good. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Your servant: Abu Hasan
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Khums applies to surplus, not to what meets a need. If you own one house, there is no khums upon it, its used furnishings, a private car, or the source of livelihood that only meets your need without surplus. But if you own another house, land, or another car, you pay its khums. As for a source of livelihood-a shop for trade, a factory, or a farm-if its production exceeds your need, you pay khums upon the original capital in the same proportion as the excess. As for production, at the end of the year you pay khums upon whatever exceeds your need. Surplus money is subject to khums only once; if it remains until the following year, khums is not paid upon it again. Regarding the question: khums applies only to the surplus sum, and you can give the khums directly to believing people in need. Ahmed Alhasan
