Question 292
Allah, Glorious and Exalted, said: In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Intensely Merciful: ‘Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and approved Islam as your religion’ ([386]). Allah the Almighty has spoken the truth. This verse indicates that our religion is complete and does not need anyone to complete it. Whoever says otherwise casts doubt upon the Quran and what was sent down to Muhammad. The hadiths of Ghadir are lies fabricated to tear our religion apart. Our religion does not depend on individuals; rather, it is Allah’s religion, and our obedience is to Allah alone. Allah Most High said: In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Intensely Merciful: ‘Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers passed before him …’ Allah the Almighty has spoken the truth. There is no intention here to diminish al-Mustafa-may Allah’s prayers be upon him-but rather to prevent our love for him from reaching the station of the Lord. When I listen to your sermons, I imagine that the Ahl al-Bayt (a) hold the keys of the universe in their hands, as though they are the ones who created the world and not Allah. Even our greatest Messenger is not mentioned as much as they are. The Quran is interpreted in favor of the Ahl al-Bayt, everyone who lived alongside the Messenger is declared an unbeliever, and religion is confined to whoever was loyal to the Ahl al-Bayt rather than whoever worshipped his Lord. They are those concerning whom Allah, Glorious is He, said: In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Intensely Merciful: ‘Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent tranquility down upon them and rewarded them with a near victory.’ Allah the Almighty has spoken the truth. I know you will interpret it in a way that serves you, or-as I hear-you will say that this verse was abrogated because Allah was pleased with them at the conquest of Mecca and then became angry with them. What I ask is: why does the awaited Mahdi not come to Ahl al-Sunnah? Are they disbelievers, with no good person among them? The noble Messenger first called the disbelievers of Mecca … Or does he come only to those who call people to loyalty to the Imams and confine faith to belief in them rather than belief in Allah? If you were a successor as you claim, the call would extend even to the disbelievers and would not be directed only to the Shia as though they alone were Allah’s creation. Moreover, an ally of Allah does not insult anyone; he is tolerant, unlike your Shia, who constantly insult the caliphs based on lies they invented to tear our religion apart-as though our religion were the worship of the Ahl al-Bayt rather than Allah, Glorious is He. You curse a nation that killed its Messenger’s grandson but do not curse the nation that killed his cousin and son-in-law, as the preachers on al-Zahra Channel do, constantly insulting the Arabs and glorifying the Persians. How long will the nation of Muhammad continue beating itself for al-Husayn-may Allah be pleased with him-when killing and crime have surpassed what happened at al-Taff? Among those killed was your follower, whom they trampled with their boots, killed, and left bleeding. Yet we continue weeping over al-Husayn so that you may turn him into a cause by which you deceive simple people, as though there were no other martyr. Hamzah, the Prophet’s uncle, was killed and his liver was eaten, but no one beat himself for him. Ammar ibn Yasir received glad tidings from Allah through his parents, and his mother was the first female martyr in Islam, but no one beat himself for them-and likewise others-because martyrdom is the greatest thing any person has wished for, not a trade whose purpose is to insult the nation of Muhammad. Supporters Response:
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Intensely Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send His prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. First: The call of Sayyed Ahmad al-Hasan is not confined to the Shia; indeed, it is not confined to Muslims in general. It is for all the people of the earth. Whoever reviews the publications and statements of Sayyed Ahmad al-Hasan and his supporters will see this clearly. Second: Before his death, the Prophet Muhammad (s) must appoint a successor over the nation to take his place, so that he does not leave the nation neglected and without a shepherd, tossed by waves of disagreement and conflict into a deep ravine. The successor must be the most knowledgeable of the people, and his obedience must be designated by a text. These qualities apply to none other than the Commander of the Believers, Ali ibn Abi Talib (a). As for Abu Bakr, the Messenger (s) did not appoint him as successor and did not command obedience to him. In addition, he was not the most knowledgeable of the nation, and you yourselves narrate how Abu Bakr would ask the people when an answer defeated him. As for Umar, his famous statement, ‘Had Ali not been there, Umar would have perished,’ is sufficient for you ([387]), and you have narrated it in your sources. The Quran designates, the Sunnah designates, and reason acknowledges that appointing someone other than the most knowledgeable to lead the nation is contrary to wisdom. If you say that the Messenger (s) died without appointing a successor over the nation, I say: this, by your assumption, is a Sunnah. Why, then, did Abu Bakr oppose it and make a testament assigning the caliphate to Umar ibn al-Khattab?! Was Abu Bakr more concerned for the nation than the Messenger of Allah (s), such that he made a testament concerning the caliphate after him while the Messenger of Allah (s) left the nation without a shepherd?! Everyone must therefore search, through rigorous scholarly evidence, for the rightful successor of the Messenger of Allah, and after that be loyal to whomever he was loyal to and hostile to whomever he was hostile to, whoever that may be. As for the Companions of the Messenger (s), we respect and revere those who remained firm upon the instructions of the Messenger Muhammad (s) concerning the Book and the progeny. We condemn only those who opposed the Book and the progeny. The Messenger Muhammad (s) stated that some of the Companions would deviate after him: Al-Bukhari mentioned in his Sahih, volume 5, page 191, and Muslim in his Sahih, volume 8, page 157, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (s) delivered a sermon and said: ‘O people, you will be gathered to Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.’ Then he said: ‘As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it-a promise binding upon Us; indeed, We shall do it,’ to the end of the verse. Then he said: ‘Indeed, the first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham. Indeed, men from my nation will be brought and taken to the left. I will say, “My Lord, my companions,” and it will be said, “You do not know what they introduced after you.” I will say as the righteous servant said: “I was a witness over them while I remained among them, but when You took me, You were the Watcher over them.” It will be said, “These continued turning back upon their heels from the time you left them.”’ Al-Bukhari mentioned in his Sahih, volume 7, page 206, from al-Mughirah, who said: I heard Abu Wa’il narrate from Abdullah, from the Prophet (s), who said: ‘I will precede you to the Pond. Men from among you will be raised, then snatched away before reaching me. I will say, “My Lord, my companions,” and it will be said, “You do not know what they introduced after you.”’ Al-Bukhari mentioned in his Sahih, volume 7, page 207, and Muslim in his Sahih, volume 7, page 70, from Anas, from the Prophet (s), who said: ‘People from among my companions will come to me at the Pond. When I recognize them, they will be snatched away before reaching me. I will say, “My companions,” and he will say, “You do not know what they introduced after you.”’ Muslim mentioned in his Sahih, volume 1, page 150, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: ‘My nation will come to me at the Pond, and I will drive people away from it just as a man drives another man’s camels away from his own camels.’ They said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, will you recognize us?’ He said: ‘Yes. You will have a mark that no one else has. You will come to me with radiant faces and limbs from the traces of ablution. A group from among you will be turned away from me and will not reach me. I will say, “My Lord, these are among my companions.” An angel will answer me and say, “Do you know what they introduced after you?”’ After this, no one can claim that all the Companions were just or that no apostasy occurred after the Messenger of Allah (s), in which many Companions apostatized. It is evident that the hadiths state that the apostasy occurred immediately upon the death of the Messenger Muhammad (s), as demonstrated by the words in the preceding hadiths: ‘They continued turning back upon their heels from the time you left them.’ There was no apostasy immediately after the Messenger other than apostasy from the succession of Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) and opposition to the words of the Messenger Muhammad (s), who designated him on dozens of occasions.
