Question 335

From Ali ibn Muhammad, from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Muhammad ibn al-Rayyan, who said: ‘I wrote to Abu Jafar (a): a man makes up some of his fifty prayers ([87]) in the Sacred Mosque, the Mosque of the Messenger (s), or the Mosque of Kufa. Is each unit counted for him according to the multiplication narrated from your forefathers-peace be upon them-in these mosques, so that if he owes ten thousand units it suffices him to pray one hundred units ([88]), or less or more? What is his condition? He (a) wrote ([89]): It is counted for him multiplied. But he should not act so as to fall short in prayer in its proper condition ([90]); it is nearer to increase than to decrease’ ([91]). Harun ibn Kharijah narrated from Abu Abdullah (a), who said concerning the Mosque of Kufa: ‘… There is no righteous servant or prophet who has not prayed in the Mosque of Kufa. When Allah took the Messenger of Allah (s) on the Night Journey, Gabriel (a) said to him: Do you know where you are now, O Messenger of Allah? You are opposite the Mosque of Kufa … An obligatory prayer in it is equivalent to a thousand prayers, a voluntary prayer in it is equivalent to five hundred prayers, and sitting in it without recitation or remembrance is worship. Had people known what is in it, they would have come to it even crawling’ ([92]). Q1: Does this mean, my master-may Allah’s prayers be upon you, your forefathers, and your descendants-that if a person owes make-up obligatory prayer ([93]) and wants to perform it in the exalted Mosque of Kufa, it will be multiplied for him? That is, if a person owes ten thousand make-up units, will praying one hundred units in the Mosque of Kufa suffice for the ten thousand units he owed, or not? Q2: What is the meaning of Imam al-Baqir’s words (a) in the first narration: ‘But he should not act so as to fall short in prayer in its proper condition’? Q3: To what is one single unit equivalent in each of the Mosque of al-Sahla, the Mosque of Sasaah ibn Sawhan, the Mosque of the Commander of the Believers (a) in Basra called al-Khutwah, the Mosque of the Father of the Mahdis in Basra ([94]), and the Mosque of Jamkaran? Sender: Sheikh Jihad al-Asadi

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The details will come at the proper time, Allah willing. It means that if he neglects prayer while relying upon making it up in these mosques, his action is not correct and it will not be counted for him multiplied. Mosques in which the prophets and successors prayed possess their virtue. As for details concerning the virtue of some of them, they will come at the proper time, Allah willing. Ahmed Alhasan
