Question 341

What is the interpretation of the verse, ‘Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah ...’? Does it apply now, or when the Imam appears, if I wish to give some of my jewelry as a gift to the Imam? Sender: Umm Banin - Australia

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. This concerns zakat wealth generally, whether someone hoards his wealth without paying its zakat or someone possesses zakat funds and hoards them. At the time of the Riser’s uprising, it applies to everyone who owns wealth beyond his need, retains it, and does not offer part of it for striving before the Riser. As for jewelry or gold that a woman keeps for adornment, it is not considered hoarded wealth. Ahmed Alhasan
