My question to Imam Ahmed Alhasan (a): I wish to marry a woman whose father is Sunni and whose mother was Shia and has passed away-may Allah have mercy upon her. She lives with her maternal grandmother and was raised to love the Ahl al-Bayt. She is now a Jafari Shia. But when we contacted her father, he said, ‘I will not marry my daughter to a Shia.’ Is there a way out of this matter, knowing that the woman is twenty-one years old and agrees to the marriage? Accepted Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. If she is twenty-one years old, the father’s or grandfather’s agreement is not required for her marriage. She may marry herself even if her father refuses. The guardianship of the father and grandfather-on condition of faith and uprightness-is established over an adult woman below eighteen years of age, whether she was previously married or is a virgin. Their guardianship is not established over a mature virgin who has reached eighteen years, and she has guardianship over herself in permanent and temporary marriage. If either of them marries her, his contract does not take effect without her consent. It is, however, disliked for her to marry herself without the guardian’s permission. If the guardian obstructs an adult woman-that is, does not marry her to a compatible match despite her desire-she may marry herself even against his wishes. Ahmed Alhasan
