Question 352
What is the ruling on gelatin, especially since it is among the ingredients of some antibiotics, medicines, and sweets? Many people are liable for making up fasts or for intentionally breaking the fast during years of the blessed month of Ramadan, as well as for missed prayers. They regretted this and repented, but some have grown old without performing even a small part of what they owe, and their health does not assist them. What should they do? If such a person is the eldest son and his father did not pray or fast during Ramadan, then the father repented and died, what should this son do while he himself is liable for prayers and fasting? Sender: Zaynab - United Arab Emirates
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Answer to Question 1: There is no issue with eating gelatin produced from an animal or using it in medicines and foods, whether it was produced from an animal slaughtered in a religiously valid manner or otherwise, and whether the animal is lawful to eat or not. Answer to Question 2: May Allah grant you success. I explained all these matters in The Laws, and believers-men and women-who are capable of explaining them to the other believers are supposed to undertake this. Regarding your question, Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Whoever is unable to fast or make up the fast pays the compensation. For whoever wishes to make up prayers on behalf of himself and his parents, Allah has made the Night of Destiny easy for you if he reaches it while liable for missed prayers. Regarding making up prayer, making it up on the twenty-third night of Ramadan is equivalent to a thousand months. Thus, if a person is liable, for example, for one year of missed prayers, ten years, or even a thousand months, making up one day on the Night of Destiny is sufficient for him. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Shawwal 1430 AH
