Question 404
Prayers and peace be upon you, O Remnant of Allah, and upon your forefathers and your good and pure household. The question below was received from the supporter sister Tahirah from America: Translation: It is narrated from Abu Abdullah (a) that the Commander of the Believers (a) spoke of matters that would occur after him until the rise of the Riser. Al-Husayn said: ‘O Commander of the Believers, when will Allah purify the earth of the wrongdoers?’ He said: ‘Allah will not purify the earth of the wrongdoers until the inviolable blood is shed.’ He then mentioned the affair of the Umayyads and Abbasids in a lengthy narration and said: ‘When the Riser rises in Khurasan, overcomes the land of Kufan and Multan, crosses the island of Banu Kawan, and a riser from us rises in Gilan; when Abhar and Daylam answer him; when banners of the Turks appear for my son, scattered through the regions and sacred territories, while they are amid disturbances upon disturbances; when Basra is ruined and the prince of princes rises’-then he related a lengthy account. He then said: ‘When the thousands are mobilized, the ranks are arrayed, and the ram kills the lamb, there the last one will rise, the avenger will revolt, and the disbeliever will perish. Then the hoped-for Riser and the unknown Imam will rise. He possesses honor and excellence, and he is from your descendants, O Husayn. There is no son like him. He will appear between the two Corners in two worn garments, prevail over the two weighty beings, and leave none of the lowly upon the earth. Blessed is the one who reaches his time, joins his season, and witnesses his days.’ Above is the full text of the narration as it appears in Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 52, p. 235, and it also appears in al-Ghaybah by al-Numani, p. 385. Question: I would like to know from Sayyed Ahmed (a) what he can tell me about this matter, for I am astonished as to who the unknown Imam is. Remember me in your supplication, my master. May Allah gather us beneath your banner. Amen, O Lord of the worlds. Sender: Abu Hashim
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. May Allah grant you success in every good and spare you every evil. Imam al-Mahdi (a), Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, is certainly not unknown to those who claim to follow him, nor to his opponents. Thus, what is meant by the unknown Imam is the First Mahdi from among his descendants. He is unknown to the people, for Allah willed that the people not take notice of the reality of the texts that indicate him-whether in the Torah, the Gospel, the Quran, or the narrations-until he himself appears and explains the texts and what is meant by them. I ask Allah to grant you success in working and being sincere in His path, Glorious and Exalted is He, and to make your steps firm. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
