Question 522

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis. I have come to the Generous One without provisions of good deeds and a sound heart. Carrying provisions is the ugliest of all things when the arrival is before one who is generous. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. May Allah make you and all your supporters steadfast for the establishment, and make me steadfast with you through the blessing of your supplication. My master and guardian, I write to you with the intention of maintaining contact so that there will be no interruption. My master, this is the fourth letter and there has been no answer from you; may the reason preventing it be good. Question: 1. What is the meaning of Sad in the Quran, and is it a river in Paradise? 2. In a narration related from the prophet of Allah Abraham (a): ‘Here a tree like Adam’s tree in the Garden of Eden will grow.’ With your permission, I wrote the following passage on the forum. I ask you to clarify: is this not evidence of the birth of a person at the end of time who will be present at this place-the meeting place of the two rivers, ‘the Righteous Servant’? His story is well known, and it is a clear indication of Ahmed Alhasan (a), through the clue ‘like Adam’s tree.’ In the interpretation, Adam’s tree symbolizes the knowledge of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as has been related from them. It is the tree that Allah forbade the prophet Adam (a) in the Garden of Eden. This is the topic written on the forum: Adam’s Tree: Al-Qurnah and ‘Adam’s Tree’ in the district of al-Qurnah, north of Basra: This blessed spot, where the Tigris and Euphrates meet, was honored by the visit of our master Abraham the Friend (a) in 2000 BCE. He stood and prayed there and said: ‘Here a tree like Adam’s tree in the Garden of Eden will grow.’ The Tigris and Euphrates rivers had remained separate for a long time in history before meeting at al-Qurnah. No one knows who planted this ‘Adam’s Tree,’ or the tree of Abraham the Friend-the prophet (a)-as some local inhabitants call it. Perhaps it was the prophet Abraham (a), for his house, which remains standing today near the Ziggurat of Sumer, is not far away, eighty kilometers from the city of Dhi Qar or Nasiriyah. In the southern delta, where the two great rivers meet at al-Qurnah, seventy-five kilometers north of central Basra, Adam’s Tree rises, and from its roots springs the city’s eternal river, the Shatt al-Arab. It is a tree with a nearly completely dried trunk that has remained still and standing despite the fall of thousands of Iraqis, as though it were the last of the fading witnesses to a civilization rooted deep in the earth and in history. A ninety-year-old shaykh who used to pray at the place says: ‘This place was once perpetual water, with no dry land in it, but the two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, deposited silt and sediment at the site of the tree. Much mud accumulated until it rose and became dry land.’ Note: what concerns me in this topic is the narration of the prophet Abraham (a): ‘Here a tree like Adam’s tree, peace be upon him, in the Garden of Eden will grow.’ Is this not evidence of the birth of a person at the end of time who will be present at this place, the meeting place of the two rivers-the Righteous Servant-whose story is known, and a clear indication of Ahmed Alhasan (a), through the clue ‘like Adam’s tree’? In the interpretation, Adam’s tree symbolizes the knowledge of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as has been related from them. It is the tree that Allah forbade the prophet Adam (a) in the Garden of Eden. Knowledge belongs to Allah alone, alone, alone. Forgive me for writing at length. This comes from the hope we place in you. I long to see you and to communicate with you, if possible. May you, the noble family, and all your supporters be in Allah’s security, protection, and safekeeping. Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. May Allah grant you success in every good. As for the messages that reach me, Allah willing, I try to provide sufficient time to answer them, by Allah’s favor upon me. A1: The Exalted said: ‘Sad. By the Quran, possessed of remembrance’ ([2]). Sad is one of the disconnected letters. It indicates one of the Imams, and this is a matter I have explained previously: each one of these letters indicates one of the Infallibles (a). Sad is also the name of a river in Paradise. It is the river of the water of life and knowledge that gives life to hearts and spirits. If Allah wills it to become manifest, appear, and spring forth in this world, it also becomes a cause for dead bodies to live, as occurred with the fish of Moses and Joshua (a) when they forgot it near the Righteous Servant. The spring of the water of life, or knowledge, that appeared beside the fish at that moment became a cause of its life and of its taking its way into the sea as through a tunnel. This was also a sign and a token by which Moses (a) would recognize the Righteous Servant, who gives life to hearts through the spring of life and the river of life and knowledge. This river-the river of knowledge and life-became manifest with particular clarity in Imam al-Sadiq (a). Allah willed to facilitate through him the dissemination of the knowledge of the family of Muhammad and its transmission among the people. Thus, the letter Sad indicates Imam al-Sadiq (a). Knowledge and recognition are particularly the fruit of certainty and patience. The Exalted said: ‘And We made from among them Imams who guide by Our command when they were patient and had certainty in Our signs’ ([3]). Thus, this letter also indicates patience. A2: May Allah reward you with good for writing this blessed topic, Allah willing. It is from Allah’s granting you success because of your sincerity, O good and blessed one. I ask Allah to gather you with Muhammad and the family of Muhammad (a). Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Rajab al-Asabb, 1431 AH
