After greetings and peace, I am the servant of al-Husayn (a), Umm Ali, contacting you through the pious Sayyid. My esteemed master, there is a longstanding request concerning which I would like to seek evidence and a religious ruling through you-may Allah prolong your life: My father was owed a sum of money by a friend of his, and there are witnesses to this debt. The man whom we are owed has died, and my father has also died. Are we entitled to demand this sum from the man’s children? For your information, my father held the man liable in the presence of his son when he demanded his right, but they refused, and the sum is large. My esteemed master, are we entitled to demand the sum? For your information, there are witnesses. I ask you to respond-may Allah prolong your life-with my sincere regards. Accepted Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. If the person who died while indebted to your father left money or property sufficient to cover the debt or part of it, then his heirs must pay his debt and discharge his liability. You are entitled to demand the money from them because, after your father’s death, you are the heirs to this right. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
